Derby County may have forked out their biggest transfer outlay in the David Clowes era this summer, but that still can’t rival some big-hitters in the Championship.
The website Transfermarkt publishes a table that compares squad value to league position, demonstrating how the Rams are defying expectations.
Based on their current position of 10th in the Championship table, Derby are sixth in terms when assessing their squad value versus their current league standing.
Derby’s squad is valued at around £45m, which is almost double the figure it was estimated to be worth last season (£23m).
And with Derby currently on a run of five straight wins in the Championship, which has them in the top half of the table, they are seven places ahead of where they should be when calculating squad value and league position.
At the top of the league are Preston, whose squad is estimated to be worth £38m. They have had an excellent start to the campaign which has lifted them fourth in the Championship.
They are 15 places ahead of where Transfrmarkt think they should sit if you believe in the theory that squad value usually equates to your league position.
Charlton and Millwall, who sit ninth and sixth in the Championship table, are second and third with both clubs outperforming the estimated value of their squads.
It does not make for happy reading for Sheffield United fans, however, with the club in the bottom three and struggling after a dismal start to the campaign despite an estimated squad value of £116m.
Second from bottom are Norwich City, who have just sacked Liam Manning, with their £90m squad being 16 places below their actual league position.
Only Sheffield Wednesday are stopping them from propping up the Championship amid fears they could be facing a relegation battle this term.
