Oxford United have been linked with the transfer of six foot six centre back Omar Sowunmi.
The U’s are reportedly one of at least five clubs in a race to sign the Bromley defender who has been flying this season with the League Two league leaders.
Sowunmi has impressed at both ends of the pitch for the Ravens, scoring six goals from defence across the current campaign for a team that are currently on a 20-game league unbeaten run.
The 30-year-old has also contributed to a defence that has kept 14 clean sheets in the fourth tier so far this season, the joint-third in the division.
Oxford are alongside Bolton Wanderers, Barnsley, Plymouth Argyle, and Scottish outfit Aberdeen who have been named by football reporter Pete O’Rourke as the teams interested in the towering defender, with other clubs reportedly also keen.
The U’s are currently locked in a tense relegation battle in the Championship, but recent performances have provided a much-needed boost in confidence. They are unbeaten in their last four matches, collecting three impressive wins alongside a hard-fought draw, a run of form that has significantly strengthened their hopes of survival.
Despite this upturn, questions remain about potential squad planning heading into next season. With Sowunmi having spent the majority of his career playing in League Two, and now approaching the latter stages of his playing days, it seems unlikely that the Yellows would prioritise a move for the Bromley defender if they successfully retain their Championship status. The club would be expected to aim for higher-level reinforcements to better compete at that level.
However, the situation could change depending on how the season concludes. If Matt Bloomfield’s side were to suffer relegation, Sowunmi’s profile and experience could make him a more realistic and practical target, particularly as teams often look for dependable and seasoned players when rebuilding in a lower division.
