ALEX Neil is “delighted” to have signed “rare” talent Josh Coburn permanently and discussed his role in bringing the striker back to the club.
The 22-year-old first joined Millwall last summer from Middlesbrough on loan, and went on to make 22 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals.
Coburn combined well with striker Mihailo Ivanovic down the business end of last season, with the Lions winning five out of the seven games the duo started up front.
Neil made no secret of the club’s desire to keep the big man at The Den permanently, and Millwall announced they had broken their transfer record to sign Coburn last Thursday, June 26, with the striker signing a four-year deal.
The fee could rise to close to £5 million, but will only happen if a significant number of clauses are met, which NewsAtDen understands are largely based on promotion to the Premier League and beyond.
Neil was pleased to get the deal done so early.
“To get him back this early is probably abnormal,” Neil told NewsAtDen. “Every manager wants to get everybody back before pre-season starts.
“Josh, we’ve seen him in close quarters. He came back from an injury after being out for quite a few months. We can see the potential that he’s got and how him and Mihailo in particular, developed a good partnership at the top end of the pitch.
“To get a British player, 22, six-foot-five, can score goals, can run, can take the ball in, can do all those sorts of bits in the game, they’re rare. There’s not many of them about, so we’re delighted that we could get Josh back and more importantly, get him back in the time frame we have to allow us to get pre-season together.”
