Newcastle United could be facing a major transfer decision as the Magpies continue to assess their attacking options, with a highly-rated Ligue 1 striker emerging as a potential target for Matthias Jaissle’s side.
According to L’Équipe journalists Flavien Trésarrieu, Thomas Doucet and Loïc Tanzi, Newcastle are among several clubs that have been monitoring the player since the beginning of the summer. However, Tottenham Hotspur have now taken a significant step forward by making contact and laying the groundwork for a possible transfer.
The player in question is Folarin Balogun, who has established himself as an important figure at Monaco since making his move from Arsenal permanent in 2023.
L’Équipe reports that Tottenham are considering a deal worth around €60 million and have already made their move. That places the London club in a stronger position than Newcastle at this stage, with the Magpies reportedly still monitoring the situation rather than actively negotiating a transfer.
Balogun remains under contract with Monaco until 2028, meaning the French club are in a strong negotiating position. Monaco have little immediate pressure to sell the 25-year-old, particularly after he enjoyed his most productive campaign since joining the club permanently.
The United States international scored 19 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions last season, making a strong contribution to Monaco’s attack and demonstrating the finishing ability that could appeal to Newcastle.
For the Magpies, the potential move would make sense if Jaissle wants another proven goalscorer capable of adding competition and depth to his attacking options. Newcastle have been assessing ways to improve their offensive output, and Balogun’s experience in both England and France could make him an attractive option.
However, Tottenham’s involvement could make the situation considerably more difficult.
The North London club have reportedly already laid the foundations for negotiations, while Newcastle have yet to make a formal offer. If Spurs accelerate their pursuit, the Magpies could be forced to decide whether they are prepared to enter a bidding battle for the striker.
Balogun’s profile also received significant attention during the 2026 World Cup after he was controversially sent off against Bosnia-Herzegovina. The incident and the subsequent suspension controversy placed the striker under an even brighter spotlight during the tournament.
Interestingly, a possible Balogun departure could have consequences for another player Newcastle have reportedly been following.
L’Équipe suggests that Monaco’s stance on midfielder Lamine Camara could change depending on what happens with Balogun. The club’s management reportedly no longer considers Camara’s departure a necessity, potentially making negotiations more difficult for interested clubs.
That could leave Newcastle with an important decision. The Magpies could push to challenge Tottenham for Balogun, or they could prioritize their reported interest in Camara before Monaco become completely unwilling to sanction his departure.
At the moment, Tottenham appear to have the advantage because they have already taken concrete steps towards a potential €60 million deal.
Newcastle, meanwhile, remain interested but have not yet been reported to have submitted a bid or entered formal negotiations.
The situation could therefore develop quickly in the coming days. If Jaissle and Newcastle’s recruitment team decide Balogun is the striker they want, they may need to act decisively to prevent Tottenham from completing the deal first.
For now, the Magpies are watching closely, while Tottenham have seemingly taken the first major step.
