Paul Merson demands Leeds United star axed following awful cameo against relegation bound Tottenham Hotspur

Former Arsenal midfielder and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has called for Leeds United manager Daniel Farke to make a ruthless selection decision after what he described as a “shocking” individual performance during Leeds’ tense clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Monday night encounter carried huge importance for both sides, especially with Tottenham still nervously looking over their shoulder in the relegation battle. Leeds arrived in North London in impressive form, having lost just once in their previous nine matches, and many expected another strong display from Farke’s side.

But despite Leeds managing to leave with a point after a dramatic contest, Merson was far from impressed with one player in particular and believes the manager now has a serious decision to make ahead of the club’s remaining fixtures.

Speaking after the game, Merson criticised the player’s lack of composure and awareness during key moments of the match, insisting Leeds “cannot afford passengers” at this stage of the season. The former England international argued that individual mistakes nearly cost Leeds badly against a Tottenham side playing with desperation and urgency.

Merson suggested the performance was nowhere near Premier League standard and hinted that Leeds looked far more vulnerable whenever that player was involved defensively. He added that, while Leeds have been one of the league’s surprise packages in recent weeks, maintaining their momentum will require tougher decisions from the coaching staff.

The outspoken pundit has actually been full of praise for Leeds in recent weeks, repeatedly highlighting their intensity, organisation and resilience under Farke. Before the Tottenham clash, Merson even predicted Leeds would win the game, claiming Spurs were struggling to cope with pressure despite slight improvement under manager Roberto De Zerbi.

However, after watching Leeds wobble during several spells against Tottenham, Merson changed his tone and warned that sentiment cannot get in the way of selection choices during the final stretch of the season.

He reportedly believes Leeds must field players capable of handling high-pressure moments, especially with every point potentially decisive in the battle to secure survival comfortably and finish the campaign strongly.

Tottenham themselves endured a chaotic evening. Young forward Mathys Tel went from hero to villain after scoring a brilliant goal before later conceding a controversial penalty with a reckless high challenge inside the box. The incident allowed Leeds back into the game and completely shifted momentum late on

Despite the drama, Leeds supporters will still feel encouraged by their side’s recent run of form and growing confidence against Premier League opposition. Farke’s men continue to show they belong at this level, but Merson’s latest criticism shows expectations around the club are beginning to rise.

With the season approaching its decisive final weeks, Leeds now face major calls both tactically and in terms of team selection — and Merson clearly feels one underperforming star should be the first casualty.
