REACTS TO SANDRO TONALI RESPONSE AFTER DEFEAT AND CLAIMS NEWCASTLE HAS A BETTER UPGRADE AS HE HEAPS PRAISES ON STAR PERFORMANCE
Alan Shearer did not hold back in his assessment following Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United, weighing in on Sandro Tonali’s fiery touchline outburst and declaring that Newcastle have secured a massive upgrade in Nico Gonzalez.
Tonali’s return to face his former side turned sour as the Italian midfielder lost his cool under heavy taunts from the traveling Magpies supporters, reacting angrily as he was substituted during the second half. Addressing Tonali’s heated reaction, Shearer made it clear that players must expect a tough reception when leaving a club, emphasizing that professional focus should remain strictly on the pitch rather than engaging with frustrated supporters.
The Premier League’s all-time top scorer swiftly turned his attention to Newcastle’s headline summer arrival, heaping glowing praise on Nico Gonzalez after the 24-year-old midfielder put on a masterclass in his full debut.
Shearer hailed Gonzalez’s exceptional composure, vision, and tactical discipline, claiming the former Manchester City star gives Newcastle far greater balance and technical quality in the engine room than Tonali ever provided. He noted how effortlessly Gonzalez dictated the tempo against Spurs, completing almost all of his passes and controlling the center of the park with remarkable maturity.
For Shearer, the summer transfer business has worked out decisively in Newcastle’s favor. While Tonali unravelled under pressure on his home debut for Tottenham, Gonzalez stepped straight into the high-stakes environment of North London and looked entirely unbothered.
Shearer concluded that Newcastle fans have every reason to be thrilled, praising Gonzalez as a sensational talent who represents a genuine step forward for the club’s midfield.
