Oxford United boss Gary Rowett has urged his players to undergo a major “reset” in their mentality as the U’s continue to struggle for form in the Championship.
With the season reaching a crucial point, Oxford find themselves just three points above the relegation zone, having lost both of their league matches prior to the international break. The poor run has raised concerns about whether the spirit that helped the team survive last season has faded.
Reflecting on the team’s journey, Rowett told BBC Radio Oxford that he believes the squad has gradually drifted away from the identity that previously kept them competitive.
“If you look at last season, particularly towards the end and maybe when I came in as well, there was that underdog, battling spirit of us trying to survive in this division,” he said. “That mentality carried us through tough moments.”
However, the Oxford boss feels that this season has taken a different direction—one that has left the team caught in an identity crisis.
“We’ve meandered this season into trying to play like a mid-table team, and we’ve been getting caught in-between,” Rowett admitted. He stressed that the players must rediscover the hunger and edge that defined them when they were fighting for safety.
“We’ve got to get back to really fighting, competing and battling for every single ball and every single point,” he added. “That’s something we’ve probably come away from, and it needs to return if we’re going to turn this around.”
Despite their recent struggles, Oxford will take some encouragement into their next fixture. They face second-placed Middlesbrough on Saturday, a daunting challenge, but Rowett confirmed that the squad will have more defensive options available. Only centre-back Brodie Spencer remains sidelined, giving the U’s a stronger foundation to work from as they attempt to rediscover their resilience.
The manager’s comments make one thing clear: Oxford United can no longer afford to play like a drifting mid-table side. To survive, they must restore the identity that once made them fighters.
