Shearer Rages: Refs and VAR robbed Newcastle in City Thriller

Alan Shearer unleashed a furious tirade on the refereeing and VAR decisions that he believes cost Newcastle United a crucial point—or possibly all three—in their hard-fought 2-1 Premier League defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on February 21, 2026.

The Newcastle legend, speaking with characteristic passion, slammed officials for two pivotal moments that swung the contest in City’s favour. First, Dan Burn’s header from a Sandro Tonali free-kick in the 42nd minute appeared to level the scores, only for the goal to be chalked off for offside. Replays clearly showed Rúben Dias pushing Burn into an offside position moments before the ball arrived, yet VAR upheld the on-field decision, leaving no correction.

Shearer called it a “blatant injustice,” arguing that if the deliberate shove had been penalised as a foul rather than allowing the offside to stand, Newcastle would have been awarded a free-kick or the goal itself. “That’s not offside—that’s being manhandled into it. The rules are there to protect players, not punish them for being fouled,” he fumed.

Compounding the frustration was Bernardo Silva’s challenge on Burn later in the game. Already on a yellow card for an earlier tackle, Silva tripped the towering defender in a reckless manner that many viewed as cynical and deserving of a second booking. Referee Tom Bramall awarded only a free-kick, allowing Silva to stay on the pitch. Shearer branded Silva “a lucky man” and blasted the leniency: “That’s a booking all day long. If that’s not a second yellow, what is? Newcastle were robbed of numerical advantage.”

With Nico O’Reilly’s first-half brace securing City’s victory despite a spirited Newcastle response, Shearer insisted the correct calls would have transformed the outcome. “Two howlers from the officials changed everything. Newcastle deserved at least a draw—possibly more. Refs and VAR got it wrong again, and it’s costing teams dearly.”

The outburst echoes growing Premier League frustration with inconsistent officiating, as Eddie Howe also sought clarification post-match. For Newcastle fans, Shearer’s words captured the raw sense of injustice in a thrilling but controversial encou
