Leicester City have confirmed they have sacked boss Martí Cifuentes after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Oxford United.
Leicester City have sacked manager Martí Cifuentes following an indifferent run of results, the Championship club has announced.
The Foxes have made the decision to part ways with the Spaniard just 24 hours after he oversaw a 2-1 defeat to relegation-threatened Oxford United at the King Power Stadium.
The 2015/16 Premier League champions were 2-0 down against the U’s by the time Abdul Fatawu gave them a glimmer of hope with less than ten minutes remaining. The result has left them sitting 14th in the Championship table, five points shy of the play-off places.
The Foxes, who were beaten 3-1 by Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on New Year’s Day, have experienced a disappointing campaign to this point after dropping out of the Premier League last season. They have won just ten of their first 29 matches, with Saturday’s defeat to Oxford marking an 11th league defeat of the campaign.
Cifuentes took charge at the King Power Stadium last July, signing a three-year contract, but their campaign has been the subject of stop-start form. Their longest winning run this term, for example, stands at just two games.
Leicester confirm Cifuentes departure
In a statement, Leicester chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said: “This has been a difficult decision and not one I have taken lightly. I would like to thank Martí for the total commitment he has shown during his time at Leicester City.
“He gave everything to the role and worked tirelessly to help us achieve our targets. However, I believe this is the right step at this time to improve performances and results, and to act in the best interests of Leicester City Football Club.
“Martí leaves with our thanks and our best wishes for the future.”
Leicester, who face Charlton Athletic at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, could still be hit with a points deduction this season for alleged PSR breaches. They are currently nine points above the relegation places.
Additionally, the Foxes are currently three places and three points above the Blades in the standings following the latter’s 3-1 triumph over Ipswich Town at Bramall Lane on Saturday.
United have already faced the Foxes twice this season, winning both meetings.
