Sunderland hero Jordan Henderson tipped for emotional homecoming as return rumours gather pace

Jordan Henderson has once again been linked with a return to his boyhood club Sunderland, with speculation continuing to grow ahead of the start of the new Premier League season.

Although no agreement has been reached and no official approach has been confirmed, reports suggest the possibility of a reunion remains firmly on the table as Sunderland continue shaping their squad for the 2026/27 campaign.

The Black Cats are expected to balance youth with experience after securing an impressive return to the top flight.

A Sunderland academy graduate, Henderson made 79 senior appearances before completing his move to Liverpool in 2011. What followed was one of the most successful careers of any player to emerge from the club’s academy.

He captained Liverpool to Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup glory, while also establishing himself as a key figure for England with around 90 international appearances.

Now 36, Henderson remains admired for his leadership, professionalism and winning mentality. After spending last season with Brentford, he continues to be viewed as a player capable of adding valuable experience to a young squad preparing for the demands of another Premier League campaign.

For Sunderland supporters, the idea of seeing one of their own return to the Stadium of Light is an exciting one. Henderson has never hidden his affection for the club that launched his career, and many fans believe a homecoming would be a fitting final chapter for one of the Black Cats’ greatest academy graduates.

For now, the speculation remains just that. However, with the new season fast approaching, any developments surrounding Henderson’s future are certain to be watched closely by Sunderland supporters hoping to see a club legend wear the famous red and white stripes once again.
