‘That’s the Hallmark of An Average Championship Side’: Gary Rowett Reacts to Oxford United Defeat at Wrexham
Gary Rowett was left frustrated and angry after his Oxford United side failed to put in a performance during their 1-0 defeat at Wrexham.
The U’s fell behind inside 15 minutes and were second best for the majority of the game at the Racecourse Ground.
”Looked a Completely Different Team for the First 30 Minutes’
Gary Rowett ‘Frustrated’ With Display at Wrexham
Speaking to BBC Radio Oxford after the game, U’s head coach Gary Rowett clearly didn’t mince his words after his side’s abject display at Wrexham.
He said: “Certainly, second half we’ve had a better side, but we didn’t really create enough with the ball, but the truth of the matter was, first off, they did enough to win the game. It’s as simple as that, you know. But yeah, quite incredibly frustrating.
“It comes to team selection. I just said it to the players out there. I’m really frustrated. I got pretty angry in there, just because I’m fed up with seeing us perform really well one game and then look like a completely different team for the first 30 minutes of the next game.
“So we can do a lot of talking, but ultimately at the moment, that’s the hallmark of an average Championship side. And we don’t want to be an average team because we know if we’re average, the reality is to be fighting once again to try and stay in this league. So, we’ve got to put more consistency together than that.
“It’s very difficult as a manager to be able to predict. You could be so good in one game and then so poor in the first 30 minutes in the next game.
“I think we’ve got a good mentality as a group. I would never question that, I would never question our energy, but we just didn’t run enough with any urgency, really, to stop them doing what they wanted to do for the first 30 minutes.”
