Manchester United have suffered a shocking 2–0 defeat to newly-promoted Hull City in their opening Premier League match of the 2026/27 season.
Hull City produced a statement performance at the MKM Stadium on Saturday, marking their return to the Premier League after nine years with a memorable victory over one of English football’s biggest clubs.
The Tigers made their intentions clear from the opening minutes and were rewarded in the 17th minute. Semi Ajayi reacted quickest to a rebound after Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens had denied Oli McBurnie’s effort from a corner, putting Hull in front.
Manchester United struggled to respond, and their problems became even worse before half-time.
In the 38th minute, Nobel Mendy rose highest to head home from a Regan Slater free-kick, sending the home supporters into celebration and leaving United with a mountain to climb before the break.
Michael Carrick attempted to change the game after the interval, with Marcus Rashford introduced as Manchester United searched for a way back into the contest. However, the visitors continued to struggle in the final third.
United’s best opportunity came in the 78th minute when Bryan Mbeumo saw his effort from a central position saved by Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis. Hull’s defence otherwise remained composed and successfully frustrated the visitors.
Despite having periods of possession, Manchester United could not find a breakthrough.
For Hull, the result was more than just three points. It was their first-ever Premier League victory over Manchester United, making their return to the top flight even more memorable.
For United, however, the defeat raises immediate questions about their preparation, defensive organisation and attacking creativity under Carrick.
After an encouraging previous campaign, expectations were high around Manchester United heading into the new season. Instead, they have suffered one of the biggest shocks of the opening weekend.
