Wrexham now in talks to sign Championship captain who once impressed Arsene Wenger
Wrexham are looking to bring in a new midfielder before the summer transfer deadline, and Phil Parkinson could raid a Championship rival.
The transfer deadline is now just over 24 hours away, and Wrexham are looking to strike more business.
10 new signings have arrived at Wrexham this summer, but Phil Parkinson is not finished just yet.
A new midfielder appears to be Parkinson’s top target, and Wrexham are keen on Everton teenager Harrison Armstrong in a potential loan move.
Parkinson has also hinted at interest in Jordan James, just a year since the Welsh international joined Rennes from Birmingham City.
Wrexham chase deal for Coventry City’s Ben Sheaf
A new name has entered the mix, with The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath reporting that Wrexham are now in talks to sign Coventry City midfielder Ben Sheaf.
A deal is being discussed ahead of transfer deadline day as Wrexham hope to bring Sheaf to the STōK Cae Ras.
The 27-year-old has just one year left on his Coventry contract, and Wrexham could pounce to snap him up.
Sheaf came up in the Arsenal youth ranks, having originally started out with London rivals West Ham United.
Arsene Wenger was a huge fan of Sheaf, telling Arsenal Player – as quoted by The Express – that he thought the midfielder would have a great career.
“He’s always ahead of the game, and his anticipation quality is absolutely huge,” said Wenger.
“He has that kind of mental strength as well. A typical British way of handling things, facing the difficulties with a very cool and intelligent way. There is something in him that I believe will allow him to progress always.
“Because he analyses well what’s happening to him, he assesses well what is going on, and that’s why I believe he will have a good career.”
Sheaf made just three first-team appearances for the Gunners, but spent time out on loan with Stevenage, Doncaster Rovers and Coventry.
The Sky Blues completed a permanent deal for Sheaf in 2021 and have seen the midfielder go from strength to strength.
Sheaf has played more than 140 games for Coventry, becoming one of the top holding midfielders in the Championship.
Sheaf is about as proven as they come in the Championship, but there is one lingering concern over him.
Injury concerns linger over Ben Sheaf
Sheaf has captained Coventry admirably, but injuries have started to become a real problem
Going back to the 2023-24 season, Sheaf suffered a groin strain just a month into the campaign, with a thigh muscle tear then keeping him out in February 2024.
An ankle injury saw Sheaf miss the start of last season, before suffering a calf injury early in 2025.
Sheaf has now played just seven minutes in Coventry’s first four games of this season – and those minutes came on the first weekend of the campaign.
Sheaf was brought on and then substituted against Hull City, suffering a groin problem, which means he has yet to return to action.
The midfielder was named on the bench for Coventry against Oxford United this weekend, but he didn’t come on.
Sheaf has never managed more than 35 Championship starts in a single season, and that is something Wrexham must bear in mind when discussing a deal for Sheaf’s signature.
