Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna retains the interest of Manchester United, according to reporter Chris Winterburn.
Ipswich Town are sitting 3rd in the Championship table as they target a return to the Premier League at the first time of asking. ITFC gave a good account of themselves in the top flight, but ultimately came up short in the survival fight.
After consecutive promotions to rise from the third to the first tier in just two years, it proved too much too early for the Tractor Boys. However, they are a club with big ambitions, and central to these goals is manager Kieran McKenna.
The Northern Irishman’s role in their stunning rise has seen him linked with several big jobs. Among them has been that of former employers Manchester United, and the Red Devils are now on the lookout for another new boss after parting ways with Ruben Amorim.
Now, writing on X, reporter Chris Winterburn claims that the Premier League giants to retain an interest in Ipswich Town boss McKenna as they search for their next leader.
Will Manchester United move for Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna?
The link between McKenna and Manchester United is an easy one to make. Not only is the strong connection there from his time there as a coach, but he was eyed for the job when Erik ten Haag was relieved of his duties too.
At a time when he was also being linked with Chelsea though, McKenna signed a new deal with Ipswich Town. He is on a strong, long-term contract at Portman Road and remains committed to their big ambitions for the future.
Separate reports have indicated Manchester United could go with an interim boss before a permanent summer appointment. McKenna would not depart for a temporary role.
McKenna may well come into consideration for a permanent job but it would be a risky move for an under-fire United hierarchy. That could play down his chances, much to the delight of ITFC.
Another job available again after Kieran McKenna speculation
While it remains to be seen if the returning Manchester United links come to anything, another big job has opened up.
Celtic have decided to part ways with Wilfried Nancy after six losses in his first eight games. Ipswich Town boss McKenna had been eyed as a replacement for Brendan Rodgers before Nancy’s appointment, and it certainly isn’t out of the question that their interest re-emerges.
Top club interest in McKenna is never far away and with two familiar jobs reopening, expect speculation to continue. The ITFC boss will be determined to keep his focus on matters in Suffolk however with an FA Cup clash against Blackpool awaiting this weekend.
That will be his 200th competitive game in charge of Ipswich Town.
