New Rangers addition Tuur Rommens is relishing the prospect of taking on Celtic twice in March.
Danny Röhl’s team secured his services from KVC Westerlo during the winter window. Former Rangers assistant boss Issame Charaï is in charge at the Belgian outfit and in January, he tipped Rommens to make an impact at Ibrox.
The left-sided defender made his Rangers bow in their 5-1 victory over Kilmarnock earlier this month and registered an assist.
He has featured for 266 minutes across four appearances to date, with Rangers recording two wins and two draws in that spell.
Thursday’s issue of Gazet van Antwerpen has carried an interview with the Rangers man. He discusses a range of subjects surrounding Röhl’s side and also his anticipation of facing Celtic.
Rangers too tempting to turn down
The 22-year-old completed his move to Ibrox on January 14th but had to wait until February 1st to make his first appearance for Rangers. He now says “a small problem related to my ankle” postponed his debut.
Westerlo recruited the Belgian from KRC Genk in 2023, and he went on to make 79 appearances for the Jupiler Pro League club. His displays attracted attention in recent transfer windows.
GVA highlight that the full-back had drawn interest from Saudi Arabia, Hoffenheim and US Lecce and ask whether he ‘couldn’t pass up’ Rangers. In reply, Rommens disclosed that the Ibrox side had attempted to land him last summer.
“That’s right. There were already some talks last summer, but nothing concrete came of it,” he said.
“In November and December, Rangers came back. I couldn’t pass up this opportunity. I’m now at a big club that’s playing for the title and is active in Europe. With all due respect, that’s quite different from playing for Westerlo. If you can play at the top, it’s a lot more fun.”
Two matches against Celtic in March
On March 1st, Röhl’s team welcome Celtic in the league and a week later, Martin O’Nell returns to Ibrox for the Scottish Cup quarter-final encounter. The Belgian maintains those fixtures are ‘equally important’ to him.
“I’m already looking forward to it. Two derbies in just eight days, that’s fantastic. Those are the best matches here,” Rommens explained.
“Wow, the league or the cup. They’re both equally important to me. These will definitely be the biggest matches I’ve played in my career.”
