Tottenham Fans Slam ‘Awful’ New Signing After 3-2 Aston Villa Loss

Tottenham fans have slammed an ‘awful’ new signing following their 3-1 home Premier League loss to Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon, going as far to say that he looked like he ‘doesn’t know how to play football.’

In another flashpoint of Spurs’ ongoing struggles as they hope to move away from a three-year relegation dogfight, they were made to rue their missed opportunities and instead ended the match with a flat Tottenham stadium staring down the barrel of yet another dismantling at home.

Conor Gallagher did manage to score Roberto De Zerbi’s side’s first league goal of the season late on, while Jan Paul van Hecke put the pressure on with a last-minute headed second, but they stood as nothing more than a consolation as the Lilywhites fell down to 18th.

Not many players can leave the match with their heads held high after such a dismal performance. After all, they’ve now won just 10 of their previous 38 matches, helping Villa end a streak that had seen them fail to win yet this season either.

But it is new £85 million signings Mateus Fernandes – hooked off at half-time – that is facing the brunt of criticism after the 3-2 defeat. One X user wrote:

“Mateus Fernandes extremely disappointing. Playing out of position yes, but spending way too long on the ball, poor touches, doesn’t look great at all.”

Another added: “Sorry but Mateus Fernandes does not know how to play football,” as a third claimed that West Ham had ‘scammed’ their London rivals into signing him over the summer.

Meanwhile, a fourth concluded: “Spurs with more creativity since Maddison and Kudus were subbed on. De Zerbi must stop playing Mateus Fernandes at the no. 10 role.”

Sorry Spurs Have Positives to Take

As difficult it is to see the positives in the white side of north London right now, there certainly were some to take away from another crushing defeat. They controlled the match well at times and, had they taken their chances better, they could have easily been two or three goals to the good at half-time.

Of course, that never came to fruition and is undoubtedly speculative, but it can also be said that the first goal they conceded was down to a ‘stupid’ Premier League rule that saw Micky van de Ven require up to a minute on the sidelines after drawing blood following an aerial challenge.

Questions must still be asked, but there are signs that a newly-built squad is starting to gel together. And, in De Zerbi, they have one of the best in the business when it comes to turning around a team’s fortunes when given the time, as shown by stints at Brighton and Marseille.
