West Ham United Could Revive Chibuike Nwaiwu Transfer Move as Fulham Hit Major Roadblock
West Ham United could have been handed a fresh opportunity to land one of Nigeria’s most exciting young defenders after Fulham’s pursuit of Chibuike Nwaiwu hit a major stumbling block.
The Hammers were among the clubs to express an interest in the 22-year-old Trabzonspor centre-back earlier this summer, with Fulham emerging as the strongest contenders for his signature. Bayer Leverkusen and other European clubs have also been linked with the Nigerian international.
However, Fulham’s attempts to prise Nwaiwu away from Turkey have proved difficult.
The London club reportedly improved their offer to around €28 million, including €25m guaranteed and a further €3m in potential add-ons, but Trabzonspor remained unwilling to sanction the defender’s departure. The Turkish side are understood to value him considerably higher and have previously been linked with a €30m-€35m asking price.
That stance could potentially put West Ham back into the picture.
West Ham keeping tabs on Nwaiwu
West Ham’s interest in Nwaiwu emerged during the summer as the club looked at ways to strengthen their defensive options.
The Nigerian has enjoyed a remarkable rise since moving to Trabzonspor from Wolfsberger in January 2026. He quickly established himself as a regular in the Turkish side’s defence, making 21 appearances during his first spell at the club and helping them win the Turkish Cup.
His performances have subsequently attracted attention from several clubs, with West Ham understood to be among those monitoring his situation.
For the Hammers, the attraction is obvious. Nwaiwu is still only 22, has already gained senior international experience with Nigeria and offers considerable room for development.
His 1.93m frame also gives him the physical profile that could make him particularly useful in English football.
Trabzonspor’s huge demand could be decisive
The biggest obstacle for any potential West Ham move remains Trabzonspor’s valuation.
The Turkish club reportedly paid around €5.5m to sign Nwaiwu from Wolfsberger in January and now have the defender under contract until 2030.
That long-term contract gives Trabzonspor considerable negotiating power, particularly after Nwaiwu’s impressive start to life in Turkey.
Reports have suggested that the club would want somewhere between €30m and €35m before seriously considering a sale.
That would represent a huge profit on their initial investment.
West Ham would therefore have to decide whether Nwaiwu is worth such a substantial outlay or whether they should wait and see if Trabzonspor’s position changes before the transfer window closes.
Fulham’s setback could open the door
Fulham’s prolonged pursuit could nevertheless be encouraging for West Ham.
The Premier League side had reportedly reached personal terms with Nwaiwu over a potential long-term contract, but the failure to agree a fee with Trabzonspor has left the transfer in serious doubt.
More recent reports have indicated that Trabzonspor are determined to keep the defender as they prepare for their upcoming campaign.
That means West Ham would still face a difficult negotiation if they decide to make their interest concrete.
Nwaiwu has also previously played down speculation surrounding his future, saying that he remains contracted to Trabzonspor and needs to return to continue his development with the club.
A transfer battle could still develop
For now, there is no indication that West Ham have reached an agreement to sign Nwaiwu.
But the situation remains one worth watching.
If Fulham fail to satisfy Trabzonspor’s demands and West Ham decide to step up their interest, the Hammers could find themselves involved in a fascinating battle for one of Nigeria’s emerging defensive talents.
Nwaiwu’s age, physical attributes and rapid development make him an intriguing long-term option, while his experience in European football means he is already further along in his development than many players of the same age.
Whether West Ham are prepared to meet Trabzonspor’s lofty valuation could ultimately determine if their interest develops into a serious transfer push.
For now, though, the door appears to remain open.
