Plymouth Argyle’s start to life under Tom Cleverley has been far from smooth. PAFC are currently sitting 18th in the League One table after winning just two of their first seven matches and suffering five defeats.
While cup competitions have offered some relief, including a 2-0 victory over Cheltenham Town in the EFL Trophy, such results are unlikely to ease the pressure at Home Park. Ultimately, Cleverley’s side must start delivering in the league.
However, last weekend was a massive one for Plymouth Argyle. Argyle had lost their last League game 4-0 to Cardiff City and saw last season’s play-off semi-finalists Stockport County come to Home Park.
In their first game since the transfer window shut, they came out 4-2 winners against Stockport, with many summer signings starring. One of whom was Bradley Ibrahim, who was very open when speaking to Plymouth Live after the win.
Ibrahim said: “I think it’s really important for us to do it for our manager (Tom Cleverley). He always believes in us, has stuck by us, the same with the fans, they have stuck with us through a tough time.
“Now it’s important for us to keep going, keep taking steps forward. I think previously we have had a win and we then took three steps back. We have to keep progressing as a team.
“All the boys put in a real good shift (against Stockport). I think we worked hard defensively for us to be able to take our chances in the final third. It was just a really good team performance.”
Ibrahim made the move to Argyle from Hertha Berlin this summer. He scored his first PAFC goal against Stockport County.
Only a matter of time before Plymouth Argyle start winning consistently
It was always going to be tough for PAFC to come out of the blocks quickly this summer, given the massive turnover the club has had.
Miron Muslic departed the club to take charge of German heavyweights Schalke, with former Watford manager Tom Cleverley stepping in as his replacement. This summer has seen significant turnover, with 17 first-team players leaving in various capacities.
Plymouth’s standout departure was Maksym Taloverov, who sealed a move to Stoke City. Key names Adam Randell, Ryan Hardie, and Daniel Grimshaw also secured Championship transfers, joining Bristol City, Wrexham, and Norwich City respectively.
Given the scale of the club’s rebuild from head to toe, it was always going to be tough in the early days. However, Ibrahim is one of many top signings the club have made, and once they gel, Plymouth Argyle could be a real force in League One.
What next for Bradley Ibrahim and Plymouth Argyle?
Plymouth Argyle have another tough game coming up this weekend. They face Luton Town away from home this Saturday.
Luton Town were also relegated from the Championship last season. They have not had quite as much change as PAFC and have subsequently started the season better than them, sitting in 8th place.
After such an important win, Kenilworth Road is probably the worst place to come. It is a notoriously hard place to play, but if Argyle can find a win there, their confidence will be through the roof at Home Park.
