Young Stoke City striker has now got six for the season on loan at Stockport County even if he’s had to be patient for game time

Nathan Lowe scored his sixth goal of the season as he helped Stockport County thrash Port Vale to go top of League One.

The 20-year-old Stoke City striker, on a season-long loan at Stockport, has had to be patient for a place in the starting line-up but that has come in the last three games – and he has scored in the last two.

He made the breakthrough on a wet night in Burslem, heading home a Tyler Onyango cross in the 13th minute, before Kyle Wootton and Jack Diamond made it 3-0 before the half-hour mark.

Lowe was booked for an off the ball incident which left Vale defender Marvin Johnson with a bloody nose and later hit the post before making way after 60 minutes to loud appreciation from the away end.

“They are three good goals from our perspective,” Stockport manager Dave Challinor told Radio Manchester.

“I thought we started a little bit slow, to be honest. Not tracking runners, a big pitch, thinking we were going to have all night on the ball – but once we got that first goal it gave us momentum and for a spell of about half an hour I thought we were excellent. We caused them real problems and were really clinical with the opportunities we created. They were three good goals for all three of the top line.

“We might be off the top of the league by tomorrow. We’ll enjoy it for what it is. We’re 14 games in. We’re on 28 points, which is two points per game and if you do that over the course of 46 games then we’ll be happy. But we’re a fraction of a way through the season and there’s a long way to go.

“We’ve been speaking and saying that eventually someone will be on the end of more than a 1-0 and thankfully it was tonight. We’ll try to back that up on Saturday at Tranmere in the FA Cup.”
